Listening to Sad Music During Sad Times

I’ve often heard that when people are sad, they have a pre-made playlist of songs to listen to that hold a similar depressed vibe. Maybe the person recently experienced a breakup or maybe they got their report card and received bad grades. Whatever the reason, sad people tend to want to listen to sad songs. What I don’t understand is why sad people would want to perpetuate their sadness by listening to depressing music as opposed to hype/happy songs to try and change their mood. I mean these sad people clearly don’t want to stay unhappy and I just feel like listening to sad music will further the pain they feel.

  1. I am definitely familiar with what you’re explaining regarding how sad people like to listen to sad music. Most of my friends also have similar playlists that they create and listen to when they aren’t feeling the happiest either. I think that when people are sad, the sadness doesn’t motivate them to become happy but just allows them to remain in their state of sadness. It’s probably that it’s easier to either keep feeling sad or feel even sadder than to attempt to cheer yourself up.

  2. I agree with you that it is a strange thing that people do. However, I think this is a somewhat good question for someone taking psychology or that has a strong background in human psychology. It is interesting to see if there is some kind of reason or tendency behind it. I am just as guilty as I have listened to “Marvin’s Room” by Canadian Rapper and singer Aubrey Drake Graham also known as Champagne Papi and better known by Drake for many hours in my room. Very interesting topic.
